Unusual Early 19thC French Rev Society Floral Wax Seal
Seal Detail
A bronze desk seal dating to the early 19th century under the Revolutionary authority, the handle of rounded spike form; somewhat with a crudely cut plain stem, the oval matrix engraved with a central depiction of the fasces topped with a phrygian cap and surrounded with crossed floral branches and inscription reading:
SOCIETE. POPULAIRE. DE. PLEURRE
A seal for the town of Pleurre, modern day Pleurs, a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France. What is most interesting is the use of the crossed floral branches which are significantly more decorative than I have ever seen before! A refreshing change from the usual, rather austere official seals found during this period.
