Small Double-Ended English Hardstone Desk Seal - MORLAND

A small double-ended hardstone desk seal, English dating to the 19th century, the rusty beige and plum agate of cut-cornered rectangular section with bombe handle, one matrix engraved with the monogram: LCM, the other with a coat of arms comprising a shield and mantling.  The arms of those of Morland of Court Lodge, Lamberhurst, kent , quartering Matson of co. Lancaster with Marriott quarterly in pretence.  Thomas Morland married in 1766 Ann, co-heir of William Matson of Titeop Hall, Lancashire and died in 1784.  Their eldest son, William Alexander, married Lydia Catherine, [for whom this seal was made], in 1792 co-heir of the Revd. James Marriott, Rector of Horsmonden, Kent, and died in 1846.  William Alexander Morland was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1787, and his brother, a Lt. Col. in the 9th Lancers, was an ADC to George IV.
