An impressive and weighty desk seal made of ebonised wood, brass and steel dating to the 19th century and from the Baltic States in origin. The handle of turned ebonised wood of baluster form with flat top, tapering to tall brass collar with beaded band to an oval polished steel matrix, finely engraved with a central shield comprising owl standing on a branch, under a helm and crest of owl between a pair of outstretched wings, and substantial mantling.
The arms are those of the family von Essen (von Essen V), from what was then the Baltic States.
