Antique Glass Sulphide and Gilt-Metal Desk Wax Seal Circa 1820

Seal Detail

A rare example of this form of seal, the glass handle of flattened pear form cut with facets and enclosing a double sulphide with two portrait heads on a blue ground, one side with that of Henri IV, the other with that of Jean-Francois Regnard (1655-1709), the French dramatist, after a medal by Joseph-Eugene Dubois, the gilt-metal collar with pattern-cut rim, the circular matrix engraved with the monogram VR or RV.  Believed to have been made for the Bourdon de Saint-Amans.
