Early French Silver Royal Court of ACIGNE Desk Wax Seal
Seal Detail
A rather special unmarked early silver French matrix, probably 18th century but could be older, well and deeply engraved with a central armorial comprising a repeating fleur de Lys pattern within which is blazon of three fleur de Lys, the shield surrounded by a floral decoration and a circumscription within a line and beaded border reading:
SEAV : DES : CONTRACTS : DE : LA : COVRT : DE : ACIGNE
An official seal for the use with contracts in the small province of Acigne. Given the armorial and relative closeness to the capital of Rennes, it is understood that the seal carries the royal arms of the dukedom of Rennes. The matrix is missing a rear fin, the evidence of which is visible as a scar on the reverse.
