Early 19thC French Rev Period HUMANITE Rod of Asclepius
Seal Detail
This is an interesting example of a French Revolutionary period desk seal, in wood and brass, dating to the early 19th century, the handle typically of inverted baluster form with rounded top, tapering to a brass collar and oval matrix, well engrave with a good collection of images including central bundle of fasces topped with a Phrygian cap, with the rod of Asclepius and serpent leaning against it, with a shield on the ground with a stylised cypher upon it, and a chicken walking away, with the inscription below reading: HUMANITIE.
The seal appears to represent the owner as one who is medically trained (hence the rod of Asclepius) and who is involved with the welfare of the public. It is unusual and most pleasing to see!) a chicken striding confidently across the face of the matrix! The rooster's proud and courageous character represented the ideals of the French people.
Presented now in excellent condition.
