A fine 18th century brass and wood desk seal for the Bishop of Mirepoix, the mahogany cylindrical handle of stubby form sits atop a brass collar and integral oval matrix, well engraved with a central armorial shield with the arms for the de Cambon family, surmounted by a coronet, mitre and crozier either side and topped by a capello romano with tassells for an bishop and an inscription within a beaded border reading:
FRANCISCUS. TRISTANUS. DE CAMBON. EPISCOPUS. MIRAPICENSIS *
The seal of Francois-Tristan de Cambon (1716-1791), a councilor in the parliament of Toulouse and vicar general of the diocese of Mirepoix. He was appointed bishop of Mirepoix in 1768 and was the last bishop of that diocese, which was suppressed in 1790. Cambón was an ardent counter-revolutionary until his death in 1791
