Seal Detail

A wood and brass desk seal, Swedish, mid 18th century, the ebonised wood handle of fungus form with bulbous stem, the brass collar above a spreading cushion engraved with a striped chevron border, the circular matrix engraved freely and charmingly with a cherub's head and wings among clouds above a coroneted eagle or griffin's head over a laurel crossed with palm within an inscription, reading:

SIGILL. KRONO. HOSPITALETS.

The seal appears to have belonged to the hospital in Ängelholm in the province of Skâne in the south of Sweden.  The coat of arms of Scania is the crowned head of a griffin and Ängelholm has an angel in its blazon.
