18thc French Brass & Wood Motto, Armorial, Aliance Desk Seal
Seal Detail
A superb example of a French 18th century desk seal, the handle of turned wood of baluster form with rounded top, tapering stem to a wide brass collar and oval brass matrix, superbly engraved with the the twin shields of marriage under a crested comtal helm, supporters in the form of a lion rampant holding a banner on the one side and Poseidon on the other also holding a banner. Motto at the base with decorative swags beneath, reading:
PER MARE PER TERRE (By Sea and By Land)
The seal is presented in very good order and it is noted that there appears to be some aged solder to the base of the collar.
