Seal Detail

The domed handle with profuse scroll chased decoration throughout, to an integral matrix, of circular outline, engraved with the crest and motto for the Toulmin Smith family.

Joshua Toulmin Smith (1816- 1869)

A British political theorist and lawyer, from Birmingham.

The cholera epidemic of 1847 encouraged Smith to demand better sanitation.

A small French poincon mark is stamped on the matrix reverse. The seal is presented in excellent condition save for a hairline mark around part of the handle, as can be seen in the photos.  It is not understood why this is present and it does not affect the structural integrity of the seal handle.
