Seal Detail

A pair of fascinating 19th century commemorative gold, horn and hardstone desk seals, the handles formed from animal horn and the matrices from engraved hardstones.  One inset with a carnelian intaglio inscribed R.W.V (Robert Williams Vaughan) and the other a chalcedony intaglio depicting the White Ox, inscribed,

Nannau June 25t 1824, 197 Dined 

TYhese seals were given to Robert Vaughan on the occasion of his reaching age at which a great dinner was given to mark the event. The attached text records that a manuscript volume was given with "The Names of the Gentlemen who were present at the celebration of the Birthday of Robert Williams Vaughan who attained the age of 21 years".  A list of the guests on 20 leaves. It continues with detials of the sizes of the tables, what was consumed etc. This event was one of the subjects set for the Denbigh Esteddfod that year, so great was the importance attached to the 21st birthday of the heir to Nannau, Hengwrt and Rhug.
