Late 19thC Steel English Town Desk Seal - Scarborough
Seal Detail
A late 19th century official device-fitting steel matrix for the English town of Scarborough, the cylindrical handle of peg form to a circular matrix, well engraved with the arms of Scarborough, comprising sail ship, fortified town (with helmed soldier) under a blazing sun and circumscription within a lined border reading:
+ SIGILLUM: COMMUNE: BURGENSIV: DESCARDEBURG
It is interesting to note that the design of this seal mirrors that of a medieval design of town seal (see image) which in turn incorporates the town's arms in pictorial form.
The ancient town of Scarborough is situated in North Yorkshire, England and features a 12th century castle. In excellent condition.
