Seal Detail

A gilt-cased hardstone fob seal, English, circa 1806, of classic form with plumed shaft and lobed cushion, the rounded rectangular matrix engraved with a full achievement of arms incorporating shield, crest and supporters above a banner with Greek motto.

The arms are those of Dering, impaling Nevill.

This seal was made for Edward Dering (1783-1808), eldest son of Sir Edward Dering, 7th Bart., of Surrenden Dering, co. Kent and Anne, daughter of William Hale of King's Walden, Herts.  He married, in 1806, Henrietta, eldest daughter and co-heir of Richard Nevill of Furness, co. Kildare, with whom he had a son and daughter, and died in 1808 before he could succeed to his father's baronetcy.  Mrs Dering then married Sir William Geary, also of Kent.   The seal is presented in very good original condition with no discernible damage to the hardstone matrix and only wear and tear to the gilt handle commensurate with its age.
