A fine 18th century steel marriage armorial fob seal and associated pierced multi-sectioned steel link chain. The steel fob seal comprises single band suspension loop attached to an oval matrix, engraved with twin armorials below a ducal coronet, supporters and motto reading:

(Dexter) Quarterly 1st and 4th Argent three lozenges conjoined in fess gules a border sable (for Montagu) 2nd and 3rd Or an eagle displayed vert (for Monthermer)
(Sinister) Sable a lion rampant argent on a canton of the last cross gules (for Churchill)
The arms are undoubtedly those commemorating the marriage of John Montagu, the 2nd Duke of Montagu (born 1690 died 5th July 1749) and Lady Mary Churchill (born 15th July 1689 died 14th May 1751).
A fascinating fob seal with a the addition of a charming hand-made pierced panelled chain with split ring. In excellent condition.
