An English, Double-Ended Hardstone Desk Seal, Circa1806-1831

Of tapering form and cut cornered rectangular section, the grey body with fossil inclusions (pachypora cristata), each matrix of matt reddish agate, one end engraved with a ship sinking offshore from a desert island, the sun sinking against the horizon below watchful seagulls, a distant two-masted ship sailing to the rescue, the other with a coat of arms comprising a shield within a ribbon and motto of the Order of the Bath, below an Earl's coronet.
"The arms are those of Carnegie, Earl of Northesk, with a ribbon on which is the motto:
Tria Juncta in Uno of the Order of the Bath, and surmounted by an earl's coronet. The seal was made circa 1806/10 for William Carnegie, 7th Earl of Northesk, GCB, Admiral of the Red, Rear-Admiral of Great Britain, Commander-in-Chief Plymouth, who distinguished himself as third in command under Nelson at Trafalgar, for which he was awarded the honourable augmentation of the word Trafalgar above his arms after 1805. He was made CB in 1806 and GCB in 1815. Born in 1756, he married in 1788 Mary Ricketts, niece of the 1st Earl of St Vincent (to which Viscountcy her male heirs are in remainder.) He died in 1831 and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son." (Howard)
