Seal Detail
A 19th century ebony and brass wine merchant's desk wax seal, the handle of flat top, baluster form with tapering stem to a brass collar and screw thread with removable outer collar engraved with the inscription: M. JACKSON AMBLESIDE together with an inner matrix engraved with the inscription PORT with the reverse engraved with W. R. LOFTUS LONDON .
As far back as 1921 through to 1930, there are found advertisements in local publications for:

Wine & Spirit Merchant
The gentleman was named Thomas Dixon Jackson. The business was then taken over or renamed around 1931 when W. G. Thompson ran the business and the name continued as the local merchant through to at least 1960. It is presumed that this seal was made prior to the late T. D. Jackson, so may be his father.
