18THC BRASS ALLOY SICILLIAN CHURCH DESK SEAL

A fine 18th century brass alloy desk seal from Sicily, the handle of rounded top form, tapering stem, screwed thread to a stepped mount and oval matrix, well engraved with a central depiction of Our Blessed Virgin Mary resting on clouds with Child on her knee, both in their glory and inscription within an outer border reading:
SANCTA. MARIA. DEL. GIESV.
The seal of the church of St Mary in Giesu, possibly that of Palermo in Sicily, the first to have been built in Sicily by the Jesuits. In superb overall condition.
