17TH C FRENCH PERSONAL ARMORIAL DESK SEAL
Seal Detail
A very good example of a bronze alloy personal armorial desk seal originating from France, late 17th century. The rear has a tall, thin, rounded fin attached with no suspension hole, the matrix rim engraved with a locating star and the circular matrix displaying full achievement of arms comprising shield (three dragons and chevron) under a helm and crest of dragon with mantling and circumscription within a lined border reading:
. SEEL. DE. DAVID. IOSEPH. DE. BALICOVE.
Although a particularly fine and deep engraving and very clear visibility, it has not been possible to establish a connection yet for the arms with the region although Lorraine is quite possible.
