Antique Rare Beechwood Ecclesiastical Desk Wax Ink Stamp
Seal Detail
An attractive wood desk wax stamp dating to the mid-19th century, the turned handle of spindle form terminating in an integral vessica-shaped cushion and matrix, engraved with a central image of two crosses between which is the inscription reading:
SIG * HYACINTHI * BOUSQUET * PAROCH * ECCLES * SALVATERRAE
+ AVOD DEVS ?OLT(?)
This stamp has proved to be quite a conundrum as it has never been clear to what it relates to, other than a parochial church region. However, despite its reluctance to give up its history, the fact still remains that the material, the shape and the engraving produce a very beguiling item and one that is sure to offer further frustration!
