Seal Detail

A fine c1830 French brass legal desk seal socket matrix, the integral brass collar to an oval integral matrix, well engraved and signed by the engraver, GALLE, with a central depiction of a seated lady justice holding scales in one hand and leaning on a stone tablet representing the Leges et Mores (laws and customs) and initials of France beneath, and an inscription within a lined border reading:

POUMEYROL NOre A BOURDEILLE

An official seal for the Judge named Poumeyrol, who was from the village of Bourdeille but who also represented the court at Brantome, a former commune in the Dordogne region of south-west France.  In excellent condition save for some wear and tear commensurate with its age and use.
