c1850 English Wood Desk Seal - WILLIAM DAUBUZ - Sheriff of Cornwall
Seal Detail
An unusual and captivating 19th century English desk seal, the handle of flat top baluster form, tapering stem to an integral circular matrix, simply engraved with an armorial within a lined border.
The seal of William Daubuz of Killiow House, Cornwall, Sheriff of Cornwall and priest. The seal has an original ink inscription reading:
William Daubuz Esq. Sheriff - 1850
The Daubutz family have an interesting history within the county of Cornwall which makes for good reading online including the marriage of William Daubutz to the daughter of a wealthy banker and thence his family becoming wealthy in the extraction of tin in the county and part of a tin-cartel in Truro. The seal is well made and interestingly made of wood which was not the trend because of the short-term wear that would make it impractical. However, its naivety and difference makes it appealing today.
