c1836 English Ecclesiastical Wood & Steel Desk Seal
Seal Detail
A 19th century English wood and steel desk seal, the handle of turned ebonised wood of baluster form, tapering to an integral steel collar and oval matrix, well and deeply engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms for England, with date at base 1836 and inscription above, within a lined border, reading:
ECCLESIASTICAL COMMISSIONERS FOR ENGLAND
A seal for the Commissioners, established by an Act of Parliament in the year of this seal, set up to address issues within the Church of England, specifically those relating to duties and revenues received by the Church. Presented here in very good condition, it is evident that the seal has been widely used by the wear of the ebonised handle, which in itself speaks volumes for this small piece of English social history from the mid 19th century. Incidentally, the commissioners were merged in 1948 to become what is now the Church Commissioners!
