Seal Detail

A rare silver-gilt desk seal, maker's mark of Omar Ramsden, London, 1938, of square section with stepped hammered cap, the stem sectioned below cap and above spreading stepped base, the cushion-rounded square matrix engraved with a shaped quatrefoil enclosing a shield engraved with a cross above a knot between the initials, AN.

Omar Ramsden (1873-1939) started his career as a silversmith and metalworker in Sheffield, working by day and studying art in the evenings.  Ramsden and Aylwyn Carr, also from Sheffield, won scholarships in 1896 to the National Art Training School at South Kensington in 1896 and went into partnership together in 1898.  Although influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, as trained professionals they were never completely part of it and were far more eclectic in style and taste.  The two separated in 1913 but Ramsden went on to consolidate his reputation in the twenties and thirties.
