Seal Detail
A hardstone and gilt-metal desk seal, English, third quarter of the 19th century, the handle of banded brown and quartzy grey agate, cut cornered rectangular section, flared and waisted shaft, the gilt-metal collar and cushion cast with leaves and flutes within scrolled borders, cartouche-shaped carnelian matrix engraved with a coat of arms incorporating crest, angled shield with leafy mantling and motto, reading:
ARMET NOS ULTIO REGUM (Let vengeance for Kings arm us)
The arms, crest and motto are a simplification of those used by Portal.
