19thC Wood, Brass & Steel Desk Seal - The London County Council
Seal Detail
An unusual and rarely seen wood, brass and steel desk seal relating to the London County Council. The handle of turned wood of baluster form tapering to a brass ring and steel collar and circular matrix, well engraved with the arms of The London County Council within a lined border with outer inscription reading: THE LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council was formed in 1889 and was the municipal authority for the County of London which was replaced in 1965 with the Greater London Council. Given the style of the seal, it dates most probably to either the formation date or soon after. Presented in excellent condition save for wear commensurate with a working, official tool in everyday use. An interesting piece of London social history.
