A fine 19th century Russian Smokey crystal desk seal, the handle and integral matrix of Smokey crystal of mushroom top form, with faceted tapering sides to an oval matrix, well engraved with a central depiction of a kneeling lady in funereal period dress, holding a religious book in one hand and a rosary in the other, with candlestick and coffin before her, above which is a cloud with the Divine hand emanating. Below are the stylised initials ME and above an inscription in Russian script, as yet unidentified.

A rare and unusual depiction of a mourning seal with the sentimental scene and indeed the dark nature of the smoky crystal, reflecting the funereal nature. In very good condition generally giving its age save for numerous small notches and flea-bites as well as some wear scuffing on the crystal surface.
