19thC Gold Mounted Chrysophrase Carnelian Russian DEMIDOV - Commander's Badge
Seal Detail
A splendid 19th century Russian armorial desk seal, the chrysophase handle of tapering squared section with rounded top, to an ornate rectangular gold collar and mount with canted corners to a rectangular carnelian matrix with rounded corners comprising shield, sword and mace surmounted by a plumed helmet.
A seal of the Demidov (Demidoff) family, an influential Russian family with a huge wealth, second only to the Tsar during the 18th and 19th centuries. The seal features the helmet which is believed to refer to the family's hereditary title of Family Commander of the Russian Grand Priory of the Order of Saint John, which, although ended by a Ukase in 1811, was personally granted by the Emperor since then, and presumably for the owner of this seal. In superb condition.
