19thC French Wood Brass Revolutionary Desk Seal

Seal Detail

A good example of an early 19th century French Revolutionary desk seal, the handle of light fruitwood, of rounded top form, tapering stem to a brass collar and integral oval matrix, engraved with a central cypher of twin initials surmounted with a Phrygian cap and inscription above reading:

PAIX. LIBERTE. EQUALITE within a ribboned banner.

A personal desk seal, it is believed, rather than an official one as the initials do not appear to be RF for Republique Francaise but possibly of the owner’s initials. In very good condition with a fine example of pale fruitwood used in the handle.
