c1747 Brass Religious Desk Seal - Arthur Collier Sigillum Commissarij Huntingtoniae
Seal Detail
A fine example of a brass Archdeacon's desk seal dating to c1720, made of brass of vessica form, the reverse is hand engraved with a stylised script reading:
ARTHUR COLLIER L.L.D. and on the obverse a central armorial shield with inscription within a lined border reading:
SIGILLUM. COMMISSARIJ. ARCHIDIACONATUS. HUNTINGTONIAE
The seal of Arthur Collier, on the occasion of his investiture as commissary in 1747 in Co. Cambridgeshire.
It is interesting to note that on the reverse are two words that appear to have been partially worn, including the word Hertfordfhire which is odd in that Huntingdon is Cambridgeshire.....
