18thC Silver Worshipful Company of Barbers Armorial Fob Seal - DE PRESCIENTIA DEI
Seal Detail
An 18th century silver armorial fob seal, the silver hallmarked handle of twin symmetrical pierced panels, one hallmarked, depicting a Dutch water or milk carrier with two buckets suspended from a yoke, surmounted by a suspension loop, the oval silver matrix well engraved with a coat of arms and motto reading:
DE PRAESCIENTIA DEI
A fascinating seal with a curious origin as the silver handle panels depicting water/milk carrier in the Dutch style is in somewhat contrast to the armorial which is that of The Worshipful Company of Barbers, of London. Despite research with the Company itself, no obvious link is apparent. However, it is an intriguing piece and worthy of further research as well as identifying those strike marks! Presented in very good overall condition.
