A fine and interesting Scottish late 18th century hardstone fob seal in original engraved leather case, the integrated handle of tapering faceted rounded top form tapering to an oval matrix, well engraved with the full achievement of arms comprising central shield with chevron and three eastern coronets, a crest above of an anchor, sailor supporters with motto above reading:

A rare opportunity to acquire a seal from the outlying Orkney Islands off the Scottish coast, the Groats being descended from a family of the same name, said to have been settled in Caithness in the time of James I.   Mentioned in a deed of 1666 are Edward Groat

In addition to the seal is an enchanting original black leather hinged seal case with catch, the lid topped with a silver oval cap, engraved with the inscription:

The case interior is fitted with green velvet.  Both seal and case are presented in excellent condition.
