Early 18thC Continental Wood Brass Personal Desk Seal - HARTMANN

Seal Description

An early 18th century Germanic wood and brass personal desk seal, the handle of mushroom form tapering to a hatch banded brass collar and circular brass matrix, deeply engraved with the inscription:

HART MANN. HEN: KEL

within a double-beaded border.

It has been suggested that the owner of the seal, Mr Hartmann may have been a beer maker or cellar keeper, hence the abbreviated name KEL(ler) as his job title. However, an interesting piece of early German social history in fine condition.
