17/18thC Marked Silver Italian Religious Fob Seal - Nostre Dame du Mont Destel
Seal Detail
An interesting silver hinged fin wax seal, the handle of semi-circular form with rectangular suspension hole pin-hinged to the oval silver matrix, the reverse stamped with approximately six marks, of apparent Italian/Vatican origins with what appears to be older, redundant marks. The obverse is engraved with a central depiction of Our Lady, crowned with a larger Divine crown overhead; with Child in her arms and surrounded by floral decoration with circumscription within a beaded border reading:
S.NOSTRE: DAME. DV. MONT.D'ESTHEL
The seal is fascinating in that the circumscription clearly indicates a region of "D'Esthel (Estelle?)" but not one comes to mind nor seems a likely candidate. This is obviously a religious seal for a convent/monastery but the marks also reveal that some are older and mainly erased with other Vatican based ones more visible.
