Rare Agate & Silver Stirling & Bannockburn Caledonian Society 1823 Desk Seal

Seal Detail

A well proportioned agate and silver desk seal dating to circa 1823, the handle of well chosen striated agate with hues of browns and pale greys, of rounded pommel top form and tapering octagonal stem to a tall silver collar and integrated rectangular silver mount and matrix with rounded corners.  The engraving comprises a central depiction of a thistle flower and leaves with the date 1823 below and inscription within a belt reading:

STIRLNG & BANNOCKBURN CALEDONIAN SOC:

An interesting and highly tactile desk seal formed of quality materials and relating to a society, popular at that time, that was presumably formed in 1823.  A nice piece of Scottish social history.
