18th Century Steel Fob Armorial Desk Seal - Meijerfeldt Family
Seal Detail
A well formed 18th century steel fob seal incorporating suspension loop in the handle, coupled to an oval matrix, well cut with a very complicated coat of arms with three helms and crest and two griffon supporters. The shield shows an arm in armour, holding a sickle, in the field below a fortification with redoubts. The seal belongs to the family MEIJERFELDT, this seal for a count having three helms and at base the Royal Order of the Sword. The first count was so old that he refused to be decorated in 1748, when the three oldest Orders were instituted. It is possible that this seal belonged to Johan August (1725-1800), but more likely his son Johan August, born in 1756, who died in 1791 having suffered from a severe concussion.
The seal is in excellent condition save for some surface rust.
